CD Swaps

Internet CD swaps are a blast. You agonize over making a mix-CD with songs that fit well together and hopefully provide a good overall experience. Then, if you're like me, you have to sketch some cover art:

Then you send out five or ten copies and get five or ten copies back, exposing yourself to some cool new music. But it's the creating and giving that's most of the fun.

Here's a sketch from a swap we did over on MetaChat, where the website mascot is a bunny:

The "vicious bunny" is kind of an inside joke with my friends. One weekend I helped a wildlife rehabber friend build an enclosure for a fox she'd come across. Then we had to chase the fox around her fenced-in back yard. The fox had probably been raised by a local pet store then dumped when they got busted, so it was pretty used to humans. But it was still wiley and wild and skittish and impossible to catch. I don't know how many times she herded the fox into the narrow corridor between her shed and fence with me kneeling at the other end to catch it, and every time it bounded right over my head with a leap four feet high and probably six feet long.

Finally we chased it into the shed. My friend went to do something while I babysat the fox in a corner. It had run around the shed and collected cobwebs all over its face and neck, so I brushed them off gently. It could tell I was just helping it, but the fox still wasn't about to put up with too much intrusive behavior, so it gave me that open-mouthed growly-face thing that dogs do that says, "I'm gonna bite ya! Watch out, I'm gonna bite ya!" And the fox was just otherwise so friendly and I felt such a kinship with it that I called its bluff. I stuck a finger just a bit in its mouth. And it bit me alright--just the gentlest "tap tap" with its front teeth you could imagine. How cute.

Well, the next weekend I was over at another friend's apartment. She has a cute little bunny she rescued from someone who kept it in a tiny cage in a garage for years. Now the bunny has the run of her apartment and is ecstatic. It does the "binky dance" often, jumping high in the air and flailing it's limbs like a movie kung fu fighter joyously warding off a dozen foes.

When I visited that weekend, Miss Bun was under my friend's bed, and my friend wanted her out. So I figured I'd just reach under and gently poke Miss Bun in the flank with my finger. I mean, after a fox encounter, how bad can a rabbit be?

Bad. Monty Python killer rabbit bad. That little bunny chomped down on my hand about all the way through the skin. It just wasn't about to do anything it didn't want to. Bleeding profusely, I tried to sneak to the bathroom to clean and put some paper on my wound, but of course my friends noticed, and they've been kidding me ever since. I have a scar and I laugh over it still.

Miss Bun has since made friends with me, marking me as her territory by "chinning" me (rubbing her jaw against my leg and arm), and even going so far as to exchange sniffs with me, rubbing noses in the process.

But I'll never live down being bit by a "harmless, cute little bunny" the week after playing with a fox.

(And there she is!):

Another sketch, just a quick sketch:

"Sometimes You Just Have to Keep Your Mouth Shut"

But it worked out beautifully as a peeping Tom with questionable intentions when taz continued it in this MetaChat communal "exquisite corpse." Why does the woman in taz's piece make me think of Sarah McLachlan?

Life is just a death-defying act.
